Robert "Coach Bob" Mangan, Arizona— It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert "Coach Bob" Mangan, who passed away on December 2, 2024. Known to many as a devoted coach, teacher, and mentor, Coach Bob left a lasting impact on the community, particularly at Ss Simon & Jude School, where he served as the Boys PE Teacher and coach for football, baseball, and basketball for over two decades.
Coach Bob was born on December 14, 1952, in upstate New York. He moved to Arizona in 1991, where he began his long and distinguished career at SSJ, mentoring countless students and shaping their lives both on and off the field. His love for teaching and coaching was evident in the many victories he led his teams to, but it was his role as a mentor that truly made him stand out.
After retiring from SSJ, Coach Bob faced one of the toughest battles of his life— a fight against cancer. His victory over the disease was a testament to his strength, but sadly, his health deteriorated in recent weeks. Coach Bob spent his final months in the Philippines, a place he loved dearly, where he embraced life and lived his final days with joy and peace.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to assist with the costs of Coach Bob’s cremation and transportation back to Arizona, where he will be laid to rest next to his parents. The fundraiser, created by Ian Mercado, has already raised $100 in its first hours.
The outpouring of love and remembrance on social media reflects the deep respect and admiration that Coach Bob earned throughout his life. On Facebook, Rachelle Oishi Esio shared, "Rest in peace Bobzkie! No more pain Bob," while Bernard Esperanza Comendador wrote, "Rest in paradise coach!" His legacy will forever be cherished by his students, colleagues, and all those who knew him.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Coach Bob’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
