Los Angeles, CA—Robert T. Wilson, a former inmate, passed away on July 7, 2024, under circumstances that have left his family and community in deep distress. Robert, who had served 28 years in prison for the robbery of a convenience store in 1996, was released earlier this year in a debilitated state. His family is now seeking justice and answers regarding the conditions that led to his passing.
Robert, who had been an advocate for prisoners’ rights, was set to be eligible for parole in 2021. However, he "disappeared" within the California Prison System during the COVID-19 pandemic, only to be found six months later in the California Prison Hospital in Stockton, CA. At that point, he was severely incapacitated, reportedly suffering from dementia, severe Parkinson’s disease, and lung cancer—a diagnosis that shocked his family, especially given that Robert had never smoked.
After his release on February 13, 2024, under "compassionate release," Robert’s condition was heartbreaking. He was non-verbal, in a wheelchair, severely malnourished, dehydrated, and weighed only 124 pounds. During his time at home, Robert mumbled that he had been attacked, and subsequent CT scans revealed that he had suffered trauma to the brain while in prison.
Robert’s family, devastated by his passing, is now organizing a fundraiser to conduct a private autopsy before his cremation. The autopsy is critical for the family to understand the true cause of his death and to pursue justice for what they believe was a false diagnosis. The fundraiser, organized by Denisha Parker, has so far raised $10 of its $10,000 goal.
Robert leaves behind two sons and four grandsons, all named Robert Wilson, who are mourning his loss and seeking closure.
We extend our deepest condolences to the Wilson family during this incredibly difficult time. May Robert T. Wilson rest in peace, and may his family find the answers and justice they seek.
