Shirley Black, Rancho Bernardo, CA—The Rancho Bernardo community is deeply saddened by the passing of Shirley Black, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, who was called home on September 23, 2024, at Baptist Hospital in Collierville, TN. She was 88 years old.
Shirley was a beacon of warmth, generosity, and quiet wisdom. Known for her open-hearted nature, she made everyone around her feel valued and loved. Her home was a place of comfort, filled with stories, laughter, and shared meals. Her three children were the center of her life, and her grandchildren cherished their “Gaga/Gammie.”
Her commitment to her community was unwavering. Shirley was a dedicated volunteer, most notably at the Rancho Bernardo High School Friends of the Library (RBHS-FOL) and the Rancho Bernardo American Cancer Society Discovery Shop. As the founder of RBHS-FOL, she worked tirelessly to support the school’s library, ensuring that every student had access to quality educational resources. Her efforts were recognized when she was named ‘Rancho Bernardo Hats Off Volunteer of the Year 2015’ and later inducted into the ‘Rancho Bernardo Hall of Fame 2020.’
Messages of love and respect poured in on social media. Linda Greci Gannon wrote, “Shirley was one of a kind. I feel honored to have called her my friend. You will be missed, my friend.” A post from the Rancho Bernardo High School Friends of the Library page read, “My heart is full of deep emotion as I share that our dear friend and devoted volunteer, Shirley Black, has passed on to be with the angels. She lived an extraordinary life—a true woman of valor.”
In lieu of flowers, Shirley’s family has requested donations to the Rancho Bernardo High School Friends of the Library Founder’s Scholarship. This scholarship will continue her legacy of supporting education and the community she loved so dearly.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at 11:00 AM at the Mesa View Baptist Church, 13230 Pomerado Road, Poway, CA 92064.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Shirley Black’s family and friends. May her memory be a blessing and her legacy of kindness and service live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
