Shuwn Mcdearmon, Minneapolis, MN—It is with heavy hearts that we share the tragic news of Shuwn Mcdearmon’s passing after a brave 18-month battle with cancer. Shuwn was a beloved partner, father, and friend, known for his warmth, generosity, and passion for music and theater.
Jennifer Ritter, a close friend, expressed her grief on Facebook, writing, "You have no idea how much all your love and kind words/messages have gotten me through the last 48 hours. Shuwn Mcdearmon touched so many people’s lives including me and LolaJane. Lola is a gift to all of us, she is wise beyond her years and I’m amazed at how she has maintained the last 18 months. Shuwn loved her more than anything in this world, he taught her so much about life, music, and theater in the time he had with her. All he ever wanted was to take care of his family, make sure that she had the best stability to be who she is meant to be."
Shuwn’s battle with cancer saw 14 months of hopeful progress before the final four months became an incredibly difficult time for his family. Jennifer shared, "The last 4 months have been the most difficult months of my life, watching someone deteriorate so quickly is something I don’t wish on anyone."
The community has rallied together to support Shuwn’s family through this unimaginable loss. Andrea Bennett organized a GoFundMe campaign to help cover medical bills, funeral costs, and support Shuwn’s daughter’s arts education. As of today, $450 has been raised out of the $100,000 goal, with contributions from Jeffrey Moon, Jonathan Waldo, and Marc Kalin.
Shuwn’s legacy lives on through his contributions to music and theater, and there are plans to create a scholarship in his name to support BIPOC youth attending Youth Performance Company (YPC) classes. Jennifer noted, "My hope is to create a Legacy/scholarship in his name to help support YPC as well as BIPOC youth attending YPC classes. Please keep a lookout for this!"
