Steve Finamore, Okemos, MI— Steve Finamore passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, November 14, leaving behind a legacy of positivity, encouragement, and a passion for teaching. A dedicated basketball coach and beloved member of the Okemos High School staff, Steve spent the past four years as a building substitute, where he formed meaningful relationships with students and staff alike.
Known for his infectious energy, Steve could often be found bouncing a tennis ball in the hallways or sharing his latest joke with anyone who would listen. His impact on the community extended far beyond the classroom, with a career spanning over two decades in basketball coaching. He worked at Lansing Community College, Jackson Community College, and served as a varsity coach at East Lansing, Sexton, and Portland high schools. He also led the East Lansing team from 2010 to 2018 before taking on the role of coaching the 8th-grade boys at Chippewa Middle School in Okemos.
Steve’s contributions to youth sports were invaluable, teaching not only the skills of basketball but also the life lessons that shaped his players into better athletes and people. His greatest joy came from being a father to his daughter, Taylor Finamore, who is set to graduate this fall from Michigan State University in Political Science. Taylor, who will continue her father’s coaching legacy with the middle school team, was deeply influenced by his passion and humility.
A fundraiser has been set up by Olivia Becker to honor Steve’s memory, with donations going directly to Steve’s wife, Mary Hogan, and his daughter Taylor to support them during this difficult time. The community has already shown their support, with over $300 raised so far.
Meri McGinnis shared her sorrow on Facebook, stating, "So incredibly sorry! Maddi knew Mr. Finamore from OHS. Our community lost an amazing soul and his family lost so much more." Heather Morse, one of the first to donate, said, "Our thoughts are with you and your family during this hard time."
Steve’s legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched, and his family, friends, and the community will forever remember him for his unwavering kindness, humor, and dedication to others.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.
