Thomas "Tom" Dunham, Morgantown, WV—The Morgantown community mourns the loss of Thomas "Tom" Dunham, who passed away on July 1, 2024. Known for his eclectic personality and countless talents, Tom was a beloved figure whose presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Tom’s life was nothing short of remarkable. Born in Morgantown’s Wiles Hill, he was the second of seven children and grew up in a lively household filled with the chaos of sibling rivalries and neighborhood adventures. Despite his struggles with formal education, Tom was a voracious reader and an autodidact who amassed knowledge on a vast array of subjects. His skills were manifold—he was an artist, woodworker, outdoorsman, chef, gardener, and survivalist, capable of fixing or creating just about anything. His reputation as Morgantown’s most talented and slowest handyman speaks to his meticulous nature and refusal to be rushed.
Tom held various jobs throughout his life, from working in coal mines to being a printing press operator, electrician, aluminum siding installer, roofer, and mechanic. He was also the self-proclaimed acting mayor of Gene’s Beer Garden for over 25 years, a role he cherished deeply. Time was merely a suggestion to Tom; he took life at his own pace, a quality that endeared him to many.
Tom wasn’t just a fixer of things; he was a fixer of people. Known for his strong opinions on everything from plumbing to the paranormal, Tom wasn’t shy about sharing his views, whether solicited or not. His stories, often repeated, became legendary among his friends and family, with tales of teaching Steven "Seagull" everything he knew, a brief romance with Janis Joplin, and even proposing to Patsy Cline.
In his later years, Tom delved into amateur mycology and became a vocal theorist on various topics, from the military-industrial complex to what he perceived as societal plots. His humor and unique perspective on life, encapsulated in his mantra, "Don’t sweat the small stuff—and it’s all small stuff," made him a cherished companion to those who knew him.
Tom leaves behind an ex-wife, three daughters, four grandsons, four siblings, and a host of nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his beloved 1986 ASTRO van. On the other side, he joins his parents, Joseph and Norma Dunham, sisters Ruth Bailey and Patricia Dunham, nephew Neil Preston, and his faithful dog Katie.
A Celebration of Life will be held on September 14, 2024, at Klaer Lodge, Chestnut Ridge Park in Morgantown, WV. The family appreciates the outpouring of love and support during this time.
Rest in peace, Tom. Your stories, laughter, and unique view of the world will live on in our hearts.
