Gilbert Bernal was among the workers identified after a chemical tank rupture at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging paper mill in Longview, Washington, on Tuesday, May 28, 2026, at about 7:15 a.m.
Officials said 11 workers died or remain presumed deceased after the incident at the Industrial Way facility, while seven employees stayed hospitalized.
Authorities also identified Dillon Miller, Clint “CJ” Doran, Jared Ammons, Tyler Covington, and Brad Covington among those lost.
Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue Chief Scott Goldstein said the rupture happened during a shift change in an area with offices, workspaces, and break rooms.
Officials reported that the tank held about 550,000 gallons of white liquor, a high-pH material used in paper manufacturing.
Recovery crews continued careful work Wednesday as agencies monitored nearby air, water, drainage areas, and the Columbia River.
