Joshua A. Josh Barbour, Beloved Oswego Resident, Tragically Passes Away After Vehicle Accident in Oswego River

Joshua A. “Josh” Barbour, 36, tragically lost his life early Sunday morning after his car plunged into the Oswego River, leaving the community in deep sorrow.

Emergency crews were first called around 1:50 a.m. when a vehicle was reported entering the river near the end of Seneca Street, though the car was initially not visible.

Investigators quickly discovered a damaged section of fencing, tire tracks, and scattered debris, indicating that the vehicle had gone off the roadway into the water.

Search efforts expanded at daybreak, with the Oswego Fire Department’s marine unit, the U.S. Coast Guard, New York State Police, and drone teams working tirelessly along the riverbank.

At approximately 11:30 a.m., a police officer operating a drone spotted a body along the west bank near West Schuyler Street, which was soon confirmed to be Joshua Barbour.

His vehicle was later recovered from roughly 40 feet below the water’s surface at around 8:20 p.m., while the exact circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.

Community members have shared heartfelt condolences online, with friends expressing their sorrow and support for Joshua’s family during this painful time.

A fundraiser was initiated to help cover funeral costs, reflecting the outpouring of care from neighbors, friends, and strangers who remembered Joshua’s kind spirit.

Details regarding memorial services will be announced by the family, as the Oswego community continues to honor Joshua’s life and memory.
